CATHERINE BATCHELLER returns for her second consecutive year with the Ballet Conservatory as the Artistic Director and principal teacher of both the academy and company. Through her professional connections she will bring in contemporary choreographers and recognized guest teachers from around the United States to give San Antonio audiences and students a taste of the current ballet scene today. She seeks to challenge and inspire BCSTX students and company members through these exceptional opportunities, while providing a strong classical training and foundation for these young dancers.
Originally from Maine, Catherine has had an international career as a Principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet, The Stuttgart Ballet (Germany), and The Birmingham Royal Ballet (England). In addition, she has performed on Broadway an on television in principal roles. In 2000, she co-founded and co-directed Configuration Dance, a professional Company showcasing leading dancers and choreographers in contemporary ballets, commissioned works, and excerpts from the classics.
Her teaching experience is extensive, and she is a sought after master teacher. Catherine has been an invited guest teacher for Boston Ballet, Walnut Hill, Portland Ballet, Alberta Ballet, The San Francisco Ballet, and The North Carolina School of the Arts, and her choreography has been performed in many of these prestigious schools. Former students have gone on to dance at Alvin Ailey, Purchase, and the School of American Ballet.
Catherine's leadership brings the highest standards to BCSTX and the San Antonio dance community.
The Ballet Conservatory of South Texas will present "WAKING FROM RECKLESSNESS" on March 6 at 7:30 and March 7 at 3:00 at The Carver Community Cultural Center. Tickets can be purchased either through The Carver Box Office at (210) 207-2234 between the hours of 7:45 am - 4:30 pm. Tickets will also be available through Ticketmaster and Ticketmaster outlets with an added convenience charge by Ticketmaster.

"WAKING FROM RECKLESSNESS" will consist of two Acts.
Act I ~ The Conservatory Company will perform 3 contemporary ballet pieces choreographed specifically for them by 3 rising female choreographers. The title piece, "Waking from Recklessness," was created in collaboration with the San Antonio Museum of Art by Michelle Thompson of Ballet Austin. This ballet piece is Michelle's response to "Ocean", and painting by Phillip Guston in SAMA's contemporary art collection. Music: The first movement is a string quartet with a reckless sound -- Staccato, chaotic, energetic, strong... The 2nd Rachmaninoff movement is adagio, almost hynotic at times.
Award winning choreographer, Laura Faria of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, created "Starafella," an abstract piece with an underlying theme of hope and joy given and shared through friends in difficult times. Music: Sigur Ross, an Icelandic band.
Nell Shipman of the Portland Ballet created "Upstream," a piece about going against the tide. Music: Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
In addition, Erica De La O and Kristopher Wojtera, soloists from the Louisville Ballet, will perform a contemporary pas de deaux, "Freeflow," by Juliard choreographer Adam Houghland.
Act II ~ The Conservatory Company will perform "Divertissements From Raymonda," a classical piece extracted from the full length Russian ballet by Petipa."Divertissements From Raymonda," re-staged by BCSTX Aristic Director Catherine Batcheller, will be a "ballet extravaganza" with a Slavic twist. Both noble and elegant. Music: Alexander Glazanov.
In addition, our guest artists will perform the classical pas de deaux, "Le Corsaire," also choreographed by Petipa. Catherine Batcheller will also perform a solo from "Carmina Burana."
Approximately 600 students from underserved schools from the local school districts will attend the Student Performance on March 5th.
